Presentation of Reports from Standing or Special Committees

The Honourable Senator Murray, P.C, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, presented its Fifth Report (Bill S-8, An Act to amend the Tobacco Act (content regulation)), with certain amendments.

The Report was then read by one of the Clerks at the Table, as follows:

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology has the honour to present its

FIFTH REPORT

Your Committee, to which was referred Bill S-8, An Act to amend the Tobacco Act (content regulation), has, in obedience to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, December 17, 1997, examined the said Bill and now reports the same with the following amendments:

1. Page 2, Clause 2: Replace line 6 with the following:

"5. No person shall manufacture or sell a tobacco"

2. Page 2, clause 3: Replace line 12 with the following:

"6.1 No tobacco product intended or sold for use"

Government Notices of Motions

With leave of the Senate, The Honourable Senator Carstairs moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Grafstein:

That, in accordance with subsection 53(3) of the Act to extend the present laws of Canada that protect the privacy of individuals and that provide individuals with a right of access to personal information about themselves, Chapter P-21, of the Revised Statutes of Canada 1985, the Senate approve the reappointment of Bruce Phillips as Privacy Commissioner for a term of two years.

After debate, The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

With leave of the Senate, The Honourable Senator Carstairs moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Robichaud, P.C. (L'Acadie-Acadia):

That when the Senate adjourns today, it do stand adjourned until Tuesday next, May 5, 1998, at 2:00 p.m.

The Honourable Senator Carstairs moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Milne, that the Bill be read the second time.

After debate, The Honourable Senator Kinsella for the Honourable Senator Simard moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Beaudoin, that further debate on the motion be adjourned until the next sitting.
